Ranthambore National Park

Ranthambore National Park is one of the finest tiger reserves in the country, situated in India's northwestern state of Rajasthan, and acknowledged as one of the last virgin jungles in central India. Ranthambore was decalred a wildlife sanctuary in 1955 and listed reserves protected under Project Tiger in 1973 and became national park in 1980. It is surrounded by the Vindhya and Aravali hill ranges and lies near the outer fringes of the Thar Desert. Originally a hunting ground of the Maharaja of Jaipur, Ranthambore was declared a game sanctuary in 1955. The entire area of 390 sq km is located 500 m above sea level and is a sprawling tract of desert and semi-desert vegetation. Presently the Kaila Devi Sanctuary, also famous for its tigers, and the Man Singh Sanctuary form a part of Ranthambore Reserve.

The tigers can be easily spotted in Ranthambore national park even during the day. A good time to visit between November and May when the nature of the dry deciduous forests makes sightings common. Its deciduous forests were once a part of the magnificent jungles of Central India.

The varied topography of the national park is home to animals like the jackal, mongoose, sloth bear, leopard, and of course, the tiger.
